R3A has just finished the exterior shell design for a 29,500 SQ FT. Shop ‘n Save, a full service grocery store with an additional 7,000 SQ FT of attached retail space.

The primary facades along Centre Avenue, Heldman street and the large parking lot are cognizant of the spatial adjacency, topography and specific use of neighboring properties. The architecture of the retail spaces along Centre Avenue address the public spaces and materiality of the Hill House campus across the street. The retail spaces will have paved plazas in front to create a pleasant pedestrian
experience while shopping.

These plazas will also overlook the monumental stairs and plaza/ courtyards of the Kaufmann building across Centre Avenue. The entry to the grocery store from Centre Avenue will be through a paved courtyard type open space to create a sense of procession. The entry itself is accentuated by a high glazed and composite wood panel condition which allows for visibility from afar. The long facades of the grocery store are broken down to scale by use of repeating standardized units and different materials. Mural art by a local artist is also proposed on large wall areas specifically designated for the same.
