As a multi-disciplinary learning facility, the teaching spaces were designed to support dance, theater, music, visual art, graphic design, martial arts, and poetry. The approach to the design was to create a “learning pavilion” with an emphasis on transparency and connection to the exterior. The goal was to maximize glazing on the perimeter in an attempt to celebrate the learning process happening inside. To support their visual arts programming, the exterior façade was to be treated as a “canvas” that lends itself to temporary works designed and created by the students. Through the use of printed vinyl film applied to the glass, or murals painted on parts of the façade that are left primed, the façade appearance would change throughout the year depending on the educational program objectives.
