A Space Reimagined for Collaboration

What was once a traditional study lounge has been reconfigured into a flexible, multi-functional environment that fosters group learning and department-wide engagement. The new space opens into five collaborative work areas, each equipped with a screen for group viewing—encouraging students to co-create, problem-solve, and interact in real time.

A comfortable kitchenette and lounge area adjacent to the study zone offers informal workspaces and opportunities for connection beyond the classroom. With the integration of an operable glass partition, the kitchenette and study space can be transformed into one large assembly space—ideal for department events, workshops, and student gatherings.

Design Challenges & Inspiration

The design brief focused on three primary goals:

  • Consolidate existing study areas into one centralized, efficient layout
  • Refresh outdated finishes, fixtures, and functionality
  • Repurpose the space to support a highly collaborative and flexible work culture

Our inspiration stemmed from the way today’s engineering students interact—with peers, technology, and faculty. The final design reflects a shift from static study to fluid engagement, providing both structure and adaptability in a compact footprint.

Design Innovation

R3A’s approach prioritized visibility, flexibility, and usability:

  • Five team-based collaboration zones, each with shared screens
  • A tech-ready lounge and kitchenette for casual learning and break time
  • A central flex space made possible with operable partitions—easily shifting from small group use to all-department functions
  • Modern materials and finishes that reflect the forward-thinking identity of the Chemical Engineering program

Results that Support the Future of Learning

The new Doherty Hall Chemical Engineering Lounge is more than a study space—it’s a launchpad for collaboration, connection, and innovation. By aligning the design with the way students work today, R3A delivered a space that empowers learning while strengthening the department’s sense of community.
