Carnegie Mellon University
Positioned at the intersection of science, technology, and the arts, the Richard King Mellon Hall of Sciences is a next-generation academic building designed to spark collaboration and redefine how research and learning intersect with the public realm.
R3A served as Associate Architect to ZGF, collaborating closely with the design team and stakeholders to navigate the site’s complex conditions, including a steep slope, triangular footprint, and integrated underground parking and loading. Innovative solutions for access, circulation, and infrastructure were developed to seamlessly support the building’s program while maintaining a cohesive architectural expression.
At its core, the project brings together diverse disciplines, including science, computer science, and the arts, into a highly flexible environment designed to support emerging technologies and evolving modes of research. A “magical first floor” anchors the experience, featuring a public plaza, contemporary art museum, and gathering spaces that foster engagement between the university and the broader community.
Currently under construction, the 341,000 SF facility will stand as a bold new model for interdisciplinary collaboration, where ideas, people, and disciplines converge to shape the future of discovery.
