Northland Public Library
At Northland Public Library, the introduction of a Commonplace Coffee café repositions the library as both a destination and a daily amenity. The design integrates the café seamlessly into the existing environment, using warm, durable materials and powered seating to support a range of uses, from individual study to informal gathering. This targeted intervention increases foot traffic, extends user dwell time, and establishes a new, sustainable revenue stream for the library. Since opening, its popularity has soared, quickly becoming a central point of activity within the building.
The café emerged directly from a layered community engagement process. Staff and residents were surveyed independently, with outreach distributed through the library’s website and newsletter, generating over 1,000 responses across five municipalities. Clear feedback identified a strong desire for a coffee offering. The final design translates that input into a calibrated program element that reflects evolving user expectations while strengthening the library’s role as a civic hub.
