Crawford is home to the Departments of Biological Sciences and Neuroscience. A full building renovation includes architectural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing upgrades, as well as a new southern façade. Research labs, laboratory support spaces, offices, conference rooms, and teaching labs are being reconfigured and modernized.

The 87,672 square foot building is pursuing LEED Silver certification or better.

  • Retaining existing historic building façade and operable windows.
  • Efficient building lighting and mechanical systems, reflecting the University’s 2030 Challenge energy and water use intensity goals.
  • Mechanical systems include chilled beams and energy recovery.
  • Aircuity system to track indoor air quality in laboratory spaces.
  • Water use reduction expected to be 40% compared to baseline.
  • Reflecting Pitt’s best practices, all building systems will be commissioned, including the envelope.
  • New exterior bike racks
  • Tracking project materials flows including transportation emissions and embodied carbon.
  • No outdoor irrigation system.
  • Construction and demolition waste recycled.

Once operational, the building will feature:
