The design harmoniously blends R3A’s rich architectural heritage with contemporary industrial elements, such as exposed steel beams and brick walls, creating a dynamic dialogue between history and modernity. A central feature of the renovation is the adaptable open lounge, a versatile space for team collaboration, client meetings, casual gatherings, and VR presentations. Biophilic design elements promote a restorative atmosphere, while carefully selected furnishings—such as height-adjustable desks and lounge seating—accommodate diverse work styles. Staff engagement, facilitated through collaborative tools like Miro, played a crucial role in shaping the design, ensuring the space not only meets the needs of its users but also aligns with the company’s vision of a forward-thinking, inclusive workplace.

Material Transparency

At the heart of our design philosophy is the seamless integration of new materials with the existing architectural elements, creating spaces that effortlessly blend innovation with harmony. We take great care in selecting fabrics that promote both beauty and well-being—opting for natural fibers like 100% wool, recycled materials, and PFAS-free options to craft environments that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also healthier for people and the planet.

Our dedication extends to sourcing office furniture from American-made suppliers, prioritizing pieces that hold Greenguard Gold certifications to ensure sustainability and enhance the overall well-being of the workplace. Every design decision is a thoughtful balance of responsibility and inspiration, carefully curated to foster spaces that are as functional as they are beautiful.

The result? Offices that feel better, work better, and stand the test of time—benefiting both those who inhabit them today and future generations.

Sensory Overlay in Action

Post-COVID, the rise in virtual calls has created significant distractions in the traditional office setup. Rezoning workstations to the second and third floors, we transformed the first floor into a central gathering hub that fosters collaboration without disrupting individual focus. The proximity to food and drink and a larger space for meetings, virtual reality sessions, material presentations, happy hours, and lunch-and-learns has enhanced productivity while encouraging more interaction. Employees now enjoy shared meals rather than eating at their desks, cultivating a culture of togetherness and connection. This redesign supports focused work and minimizes distractions, creating a balanced environment where creativity and collaboration thrive.

Collaborative Approach

R3A’s team worked closely to design a workspace that aligns with our unique needs and values as a creative studio. The process centered on inclusivity and flexibility, offering tailored solutions beyond a one-size-fits-all approach. We actively involved the entire staff in the selection process through polling, digital whiteboarding on Miro, and in-person workshops, ensuring that everyone’s input was valued. R3A’s commitment to personalization allowed us to carefully evaluate layouts and furnishings, creating a space that prioritizes comfort, productivity, and sensory needs—particularly for neurodiverse staff. The outcome is a workspace that embraces diversity, focusing on sensory overlay and future adaptability.

A Focus on Well-being

Research indicates that 81% of employees believe their work environment is crucial to their health and well-being. In response, our studio’s design prioritizes physical and mental wellness, cultivating an environment that enhances engagement and job satisfaction. Ergonomic workstations and task chairs with perching abilities that encourage movement to ensure daily comfort. Flexible zoning and advanced technology enable staff to move fluidly and work seamlessly across the office. A dedicated mental health room offers a serene retreat outfitted with a recliner, soft lighting, and soothing amenities for moments of respite. By incorporating more spaces for impromptu meetings and collaboration, we’ve eliminated barriers to creativity and productivity. This thoughtful design empowers our team to thrive, fostering an environment where they can perform at their best.

Virtual Reality Studio

Relocating our virtual reality setup from the second floor to the first has fundamentally improved our collaboration. The original space lacked the flexibility needed for dynamic activities and couldn’t accommodate the simultaneous presentation of finish materials with the VR experience. The new first-floor environment is expansive and inviting, offering a generous layout and circulation space supporting VR interaction while facilitating seamless guest engagement. Integrating food and beverage options enhances the overall experience, creating a more welcoming atmosphere for clients and team members. This strategic redesign enhances VR’s functionality within our workflow and empowers clients to make faster, more informed decisions. By fostering a space for real-time collaboration, it cultivates a more interactive and creative environment, driving both productivity and innovation.
