University of Pittsburgh
In an effort to break away from the current mold of dormitory-style undergraduate housing, the University of Pittsburgh asked R3A to design a living community for 500 students that recognized and respected all of the quirks, patterns and urban characteristics of the vibrant and eclectic Oakland neighborhood.
R3A responded with a series of eight, four-story, gable-roofed apartment buildings with sixteen four-bedroom apartments in each one, clustered around a progression of courtyards connected by an interior street. Occupying an area the size of a South Oakland block, the complex achieves the look akin to that of its neighbors, an eclectic mix of brick and Victorian townhouses and low-rise apartment blocks.
