A wooded rolling farmland site slopes down and away from a country lane, then back up to the homesite knoll. Earth excavation for a small pond forms the entry drive earth bridge melding the landscape between the pond and a 200 year-old white oak. The house answers the needs of the client with a simple rectangular form reminiscent of a Pennsylvania farm building. A pergola identifies the front door and connects to the garage “outbuilding”. The budget dictated limited square footage, and an approach that stacked living space into the roof form. Deep overhangs control the sun and anchor the house to the landscape. Operable casement windows direct the breeze from the west to provide natural cooling. This project was the winner of two design awards and published in Pittsburgh Magazine.
